I didn't really like him before reading this book, but now appreciate the man much more.
The second half is the part with information about his writing process and some writing advice. The first part isn't useful if you only want to learn about King's writing methods, but it is interesting enough in itself.
King in his earlier life seems a lot like Eddie Dean from the Dark Tower novels. As for the second half, you won't find any magical formulas to follow. In fact, King's writing process seems very non-formulaic. Perhaps the best piece of advice he gives is to get a copy of The Elements of Style by Strunk and White.
That book should be required reading in every high school English class. King also explains a little about the publishing world and some useful tidbits about first vs second drafts. All in all, it was interesting to get his thoughts about writing, but there isn't anything spectacular here.
And I think that was sort of part of the point:But in this memoir of the craft, he doesn't really explore those deeper connections between self and story. On Writing would have been a far more memorable book if it had focused on King's love of the night rather than his love of the deleted adverb.
