The relationship is torn apart after they come to the realization that they have a quadroon baby or quarter black. Neither of them know that either one could be the cause of the mixed baby. Armand sees this as a curse to his family name and disowns Desiree and the baby.

They were indoctrinated to believe that the goal of their life is to serve for their husband. She views life as being a good wife and serving for her husband. She depends on her husband, Armand, for almost everything.

Her happiness and sorrows are associated with his. When Desiree gives birth to a quadroon baby, Armand neglects her and the child just because the child is not white. He accuses Desiree of being with mixed blood. Having been found as a toddler by Valmondae family, Desiree cannot find enough grounds to deny it because of her obscure origin.

When Armand asks her to go from his home, Desiree finds herself torn apart. She cannot imagine any life without her husband. In utter despair she leaves with her child and never returns back. Kate by means of Desiree in the story has presented the dependence of women on her husband.

Being married, women lost their freedom and judgment ability. It was their husband who decided for them. Living in a society where women are considered to be second class citizen and with their fixed role as of daughter, wife, and mother, they had very little power to decide about themselves.

Men were dominant over women, as Armand is with Desiree. She was like a slave of him whom he used to fulfill his needs and desire. In the story, the protagonist Louise Mallard suffers from a heart problem which to an extent shows how much she is oppressed in her marriage. Unlike Desiree, her heart is not in the marriage.

She takes marriage as a confinement and a battle of will between husband and wife. She is not satisfied with the limitations that are imposed upon her being a wife.
